Parental Experience
摘要
Pregnancy loss is a common occurrence, with seven babies stillborn (>24 weeks gestation) and 500 miscarried (<24 weeks gestation) every day in the UK alone [1]. This extremely traumatic event can have a significant impact on a family. This includes possible impacts on the family’s mental health including anxiety, depression, and attachment disorders for present or future children, which can in turn lead to relationship breakdown and can have an impact on an individual’s earnings and career [2, 3]. Compounding these effects, there is often a lack of open discussion surrounding pregnancy loss which can further add to a feeling of isolation and failure [4–14]. Alongside these emotional effects, there are the medical implications for future pregnancies, with a 20-fold recurrence risk observed for subsequent pregnancies [15, 16]. Providing emotional support and suitable medical care to these families is therefore imperative to try and minimize these potential negative outcomes.
