Our intuition tells us that “more is different”. Yet we have seen that emergence is an illusion. How can these be reconciled? This chapter takes a physicalist approach to this question by unpacking the concept of emergence. Our perception of phenomena as emergent can be seen as a shorthand for one or more of the following: wonder at the range of interesting phenomena; lack of imaginative understanding; unsolved problems; the difficulty of prediction in complex systems; the properties of models and approximations or the nature of the special sciences.
