The media publics that negotiate the Balkans, using the term “Balkans,” began in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the displacement of the European Orient took place on several levels at the same time. I understand Balkanization as the paradoxical relationship of Southeast Europe with the West, which on the one hand wants to bind the population in the Balkans to itself with promises and integration prospects, and on the other hand keeps them at a distance due to an imagined otherness. This concluding chapter discusses the impact of media on Balkanization as well as the political and medial power of European resp. Western historiography and epistemology based on transregional and transatlantic Encounters/encounters.
