“Gender is a sort of imitation for which there is no original; it is a type of imitation that, as a result, and consequence of the imitation itself, develops the very concept of the original”. People whose gender identity differs from the gender assigned to them at birth are referred to as “transgender” under this general term. The term “transgender” was first used by American transgender activist Leslie Feinberg (1949–2014) to refer to all forms of gender nonconformity. For most transgender people living in Tamil Nadu, the exclusion is their main issue. Young trans people often end up in the care of deviant transgender people because they are unaware of the different welfare programs the government has launched. In order to create the smartphone application “Thirunar,” which serves as a platform for raising awareness, this research piece gathered information from 56 transgender people living in Chennai.
