This part offers a comprehensive study of abbreviating practices of scribes involved in the production of fourteen manuscript copies of works by Rolle, Lydgate and Gower. Starting from the palaeographic profile and the distribution of and morpholexical contexts for specific visual forms, the chapter then proceeds to the relationship between the form/ function dyad and the linguistic matrix into which abbreviations forms are embedded. Relying on the visual code-switching framework, the chapter addresses language spatial and language content relations, as well as language mixing type in abbreviated manuscript texts, only to expand this interpretative framework by including the visual pragmatic perspective, in which potential pragmatic (textual, social, and modal) functions of abbreviations are considered. The chapter ends on a note on the multimodality of abbreviation symbols.
