Analyzing CO2 Emission: A Case Study of Batumi State Maritime Academy

The average temperature of the earth is rising due to anthropogenic activities; consequently, this causes climate change. The principal contributor to global warming emitted by human activities is carbon dioxide, which has increased in the atmosphere by 50%. To mitigate the results, every organization undertakes numerous initiatives. Depending on the estimations of the United Nations (UN), to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must begin falling by 7.6% each year. The principal purpose of the research is to determine to what extent Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) influences the climate. A quantitative research approach was used to acquire accurate energy consumption and emissions information. Researchers analyzed the energy bills provided by the financial department, to obtain an annual energy consumption. Then, the authors collected information about energy consumers. The emission factor was applied to consume electricity and natural gas. Findings show that the total number of emissions in 2022 was approximately 222,166.992 kg. It is also noticed that the academy does not have an energy management system. The survey findings demonstrated that the BSMA requires contemporary approaches to reduce the negative impact on the climate. The study can serve as a starting point for implementing CO2 emissions reduction activities from maritime academy operations.
