Final thoughts: One of the points made earlier that landscape is not simply a response to geology (rock type), but is the product of three phases which may be separated from each other by long periods of geological time. The three phases are: 1) the formation of the rocks themselves; 2) their structural deformation and uplift; and 3) their erosion to create the landscape we observe. It is true that both rock type, and tectonic deformation and uplift may be expressed in the landscape at both gross and detailed scales, but the timescale of the erosional landform development itself is at most only a few million years, rather than the several hundred million years of even only the post-Precambrian part of the geological timescale.
