What are landscapes? Usually we mean the visible features, both natural and human-influenced, of a tract of the earth’s surface. The natural “physical” features would include mountains, hills, valleys, plains, rivers and coastal features (ie. the geomorphology), plus vegetation cover in so far as it is “natural” and not excessively managed by humans. The human landscape would include managed (semi-natural) vegetation including woodland and farmland, plus rural settlements (in the French context: villages). Our perception of landscape is conditioned by both its physical and human features. This book deals with the very diverse physical landscapes, which form the geomorphology of France. I use both a thematic approach (Chaps. 1 – 5 and 16 ), putting French geomorphology into its broader geological context, and a regional approach (Chaps. 6 – 15 ), looking in more detail at the diversity of French landscapes.
