The overall objective of sedation in pediatric imaging studies is to provide safe and effective sedation in order to facilitate optimal diagnostic images. Pediatric imaging studies vary in duration, level of immobility required for quality imaging results, discomfort involved, and potential patient distress. In the setting of remote clinical areas, it is essential to ensure appropriate patient monitoring with readily available qualified personnel and rescue equipment. The establishment of a sedation service is crucial in promoting patient safety, efficiency, and quality assessment. Sedation planning should be individualized, ideally matching the duration of sedation with the duration and requirements of the study or procedure. This chapter focuses on the unique sedation requirements related to common pediatric imaging procedures.
