Belonging is used in various contexts and disciplines, and it is often related to describing a sense of fitting in a specific place and the practice of boundary-making. Belonging is a dynamic process with many dimensions that connects us with our social, cultural, relational and material worlds. In the Healthy Start case study we explored how sharing food recipes among migrants can reflect various layers of belonging. A group of people with different backgrounds living in Norway met in a public space, a language class, shared recipes, talked about food and ate together. This potentially fostered a sense of belonging to the class, Norway, their original world and global culture. The Healthy Start case shows that food allows for exploring various layers of belonging and that people who migrate experience the complexity of belonging to various people, places and food cultures.
