In this chapter Lisa Gee combines literary archaeology with an analysis of William Hayley’s biographical treatments to explore the lives and stories of the five women with whom Hayley contracted engagements, married or fathered children. Of these five women—Frances “Fanny” Page; Eliza Ball; Catan; Mary Cockerell; and Mary Wellford—three are portrayed in Hayley’s published life writing in guises incongruent with archival evidence, while the other two are entirely absent.
