On 29 March and 12 April 2022 the art historian, Alex Kidson, and literary scholar, Morton D. Paley, discussed Hayley’s relationships with George Romney and William Blake. Mark Crosby and Lisa Gee facilitated the conversation, and its central thread was the tension between how Hayley perceived his relationships with the visual artists he commissioned and collaborated with, and how they perceived this. We started by asking each scholar to explain their interest in Hayley. For Alex, this was Hayley’s role as Romney’s patron. For Morton, it was reading Bishop’s Blake’s Hayley “in which Hayley became a real being and not idealized in any way, but not the caricature that Blake presents”. This chapter is an edited (for clarity) transcription of the discussion, which we have divided into sections, each focused on one topic.
