Although Romney followed the details of Hayley’s text in his Triumphs of Temper paintings but gave them his own emphasis, and in Flaxman Modelling the Bust of Hayley the painter gently lampooned Hayley’s pretensions. In his refusal to alter his representations of himself in this painting and in The Four Friends, Romney showed himself independent of his friend’s influence.
