Digital learning provides many opportunities for both students and institutions to enhance the learning environment. However, this method of learning can be isolating for students and lack the opportunity for peer-to-peer interaction and the development of learning communities. Within this chapter an outline will be provided of the ‘Belonging Project’ introduced in the Law School of The Open University. The project aim was to reduce student isolation, increase motivation and develop a sense of belonging. The Belonging Project takes a whole qualification approach to developing student belonging by providing opportunities to meet online with other students and staff via a programme of guest lectures, coffee events, and the Law School Blog. This chapter will outline how the project was introduced and some of the challenges inherent in setting up such a programme. It will then discuss the findings from the mixed-method evaluation undertaken and the impact of the project. Unexpected findings, future implications of the work and suggestions for further research will be explored before concluding with tips for other institutions thinking of undertaking such a project.
