This chapter introduces the rationale behind the development of the SIMPLE-G framework and the role it can play in the global sustainability debate. It is designed to document an open-source framework for multiscale analysis of land and water sustainability challenges. Given SIMPLE-G’s emphasis on simplicity and transparency, it is well suited to use in the classroom. By providing a minimodel module for SIMPLE-G, users can analyze outcomes at the level of individual grid cells as well as in a global context. This will help to guide model parameterization, calibration, and validation. The eight diverse applications offered in this book provide a starting point for others to modify and extend this framework to address a wide range of sustainability challenges facing the world today.
