Engineers possess skills such as judgement and decision making, complex problem solving and critical thinking that can serve them well in all levels of management in an organization. Retroactive data is usually used to show the number of engineers in management and leadership positions, such as Business Insider’s statement that “33% of the S&P 500 CEOs’ undergraduate degrees are in engineering” (Aquino in Surprising facts about CEOs, 2011 [1]). This chapter explores data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, specifically, O*NET data, that shows the skills, knowledge and work styles of engineers inherent in their educational training and technical engineer positions. These characteristics can be leveraged and developed for higher-level engineering, general management and executive organizational positions, should engineers choose to pursue those positions. Additionally, this chapter discusses technical and managerial career paths for engineers. This chapter forms a foundation for identifying skills, knowledge and work styles for engineers, engineering managers, general managers and executive level positions and identifying similarities and differences between these job classifications.
