Evans explores free markets and free trade highlighting their ethical, epistemological, and economic superiority over central planning and protectionism. Only those societies that respect ‘property in and of the person’ have delivered markedly higher levels of prosperity since the industrial revolution. Questioning what we mean by ‘markets’, ‘capitalism’, and ‘free trade’ on a planet where private property rights are still precluded from more two-thirds of its surface, makes for interesting reflection. As does the history of privately produced public goods in law, education, and money. While it is not necessary to build Libertopia, it would nevertheless be helpful to recognise that many of the scary things that are thought would happen without government are often the things that happen because of it.
