In this chapter, Jon Moynihan reviews Free Trade past and present in the UK, from the abolition of the Corn Laws, through the protectionist middle decades of the 20th Century, and on to the present, where Free Trade successes now tussle with anti-free-trade barriers (both overt and disguised). He shows the extraordinary benefits that a proper free trading stance can bring to the UK’s economy and its people, and calls for a forward-looking global perspective that will both liberate the country’s economic potential to export to the world, at the same time bringing better, cheaper Goods and Services into the country—via new Free Trade agreements, and expansion of old ones.
