The Rt Hon LizTruss was the fifty-sixth Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, prior to which she held a number of ministerial posts during a ten-year career in government, including Secretary of State for International Trade between 2019 and 2021. This chapter discusses some of the aspects of negotiating trade deals that are not often described in economics textbooks but are important to understand for all those interested in trade. The rivalries, the pressure groups on both sides of negotiations and the political pressures, among other factors, are discussed from a first-hand perspective.
