The ‘Ignorance as a Choice’ Paradox, and the Role of Depleted Resources in the Responses to Climate Messages
摘要
This chapter aims to dismantle the common assumption that enriching individuals with increased knowledge cultivates rational decision-making and behavioural adaptations. It juxtaposes inquiries into the intricacies of human cognitive acquisition with the studies on ignorance, elucidating why certain individuals pride themselves on their lack of knowledge and embrace a state of contented obliviousness. Moreover, it engages with the paradoxical nature of knowledge to scrutinise media representations of climate-related advancements and points to the necessity to accommodate cognitive and psychological mechanisms concerning the reception of climate change information.
