In this chapter, we discuss measurements of electromagnetic and hadronic energy and present various sub-detectors to measure these. We discuss new concepts, one that is based on particle flow and another that combines measurements of scintillation light and Cherenkov light. We start with summarizing some characteristics of electromagnetic showers.
