Benedetta Porcaroli is a new kind of star in Italy, perhaps the first youth star to come to international prominence through a Netflix streaming platform production (i.e., teen TV series Baby, 2018 to 2020), who has consolidated a cinematic career in Italian quality cinema, in part during the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter considers how her use of media, and especially social media, mobilizes discourses of neoliberal girlhood, and in particular popular feminism and its “affective dissonances,” to effect a shift from teen identity to adulthood. Lucia Tralli has already observed the gendered nature of the use of Instagram by these new young female stars, above all in terms of the strategic labor of “relatability” in which girl celebrities tend to engage. The chapter builds on this work to show how Porcaroli also makes a strategic use of appearances alongside other stars in her media engagement—including Riccardo Scamarcio and older female stars like Margherita Buy—to position herself as a member of an Italian star community.
