Pier Francesco Favino, the three-time winner of the David di Donatello award, is perhaps the most versatile Italian contemporary screen performer. Since the beginning of his career, Favino has alternated genre and auteur cinema with mainstream films, without losing that continuity of image indispensable to every film star. His physical appearance, marked by a stocky build and a pronounced jaw, evokes strong and decisive masculinity, and his off-screen life represents a model of integrity and civic sense. These virtues are embodied by Favino in biopics such as Gino Bartali. L’intramontabile (Bartali: The Iron Man, 2006), Una questione privata (Rainbow: A Private Affair, 2017) and Il generale della Rovere (General Della Rovere, 2011). This chapter will analyze not only Favino’s relationship with his work, understood as both artistic practice and entertainment but also the exportability of his Italianness and his ability to embody different types of Italian male: the fragile man, the corrupt politician, the “inetto,” and the powerful man.
