Despite advances in surgical technology, there is still significant morbidity associated with rectal cancer surgery. This is in part due to the close proximity of vital structures to the rectum, the effects of radiotherapy and the challenges of operating in the narrow pelvis, particularly in the obese population. This chapter reviews the common postoperative complications of rectal cancer surgery and key strategies for prevention and management.
