Abdominal entry is often the most dangerous step of minimally invasive surgery and accounts for approximately 50% of serious laparoscopic complications such as visceral and vascular injuries as well as medico-legal litigations [1–3]. Even though the rate of complication with the first trocar entry is only about 1%, laparoscopic trocars are still the most common device named in these litigations, making up one-third of all claims [3]. Multiple methods of entry exist, such as direct entry, Veress needle (VN) entry, and Hassan (open) entry.
