This chapter reviews the incidence of breast cancer and common risk factors for breast cancer and also introduces the BIRADS lexicon, the rationale and recommendations for screening, and indications for diagnostic breast imaging. A review of the mammography quality standards act (MQSA) is also briefly presented as it applies to both screening and diagnostic imaging.
