Advancements in Malware Evasion: Analysis Detection and the Future Role of AI

This chapter examines the evolution of malware evasion tactics and techniques, focusing on analysis detection. While the topic is well-researched and broad, we intend to provide an overview of malware dynamic analysis and evasion. The information we gather can be used as a starting point for understanding the current landscape but also as a resource for potential new research opportunities. The chapter also provides a historical backdrop of malware evolution, emphasising the tactics used to hide malicious activities from security tools and analysts. We highlight the arms race between malware developers and cybersecurity defenders, focusing on various anti-analysis techniques such as environment detection, reverse Turing tests, and the use of artificial intelligence. Our contribution also pinpoints the growing significance of AI in both improving and countering malware evasion strategies and what would be some potentially interesting areas for future research.
