The future is circular: following this vision, the exhibition Design Lab #8 Material Loops: Paths to a Circular Future presented trailblazing design projects that reflect the potential of circular material. This Design Lab #8 was the result of a curatorial collaboration between the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin (Museum of Decorative Arts) and the Hans Sauer Foundation in Munich, which has been working on the topic of a possible future circular society for several years already, and serves here as exemplary use case for involving citizens in experiences of a circular world. Within the framework of this chapter, special attention will be paid to projects that deal with the topic of circular plastics, as well as to the people behind them. In addition to presenting the exhibition and the design projects on display, this contribution aims to provide an insight into the ideas of impact and modes of action beyond the exhibition. The exhibition can be seen as an example for gathering, opening, and communicating the diversity of circular materials and their application in the context of a circular society not only to a wider audience but also to the stakeholders involved. The chapter looks at the results of the “museum experiment”—successes, failures, and learnings—that might be helpful to any future exhibition or mediation project on topics of relevance to society as a whole.
