Innovative Rubbers for More Sustainable Tires

Global efforts toward sustainable mobility are driving demand for tires with reduced emissions. The focus is not only on reducing CO2 emissions to combat global warming, but also on tire-related microparticle emissions caused by abrasion. This chapter explores innovative rubber-based solutions to minimize tire emissions. Key topics include sustainable rubber production and novel rubber grades that could reduce emissions from tire use. Two alternatives to the widely used natural rubber, which is mainly sourced from the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) are examined: (i) TARAXAGUM™, a natural rubber derived from Taraxacum koksaghyz, which offers more sustainable production methods and a lower environmental footprint, and (ii) BISYKA, a biomimetic synthetic rubber with superior abrasion resistance compared to natural rubber in similar tire compounds. BISYKA can significantly reduce tire-related microparticle emissions without compromising rolling resistance or safety. The potential of these rubber-based innovations is considered in the light of recent developments and upcoming regulations that are expected to impose stricter requirements on tire emissions in the near future.
