Polyurethanes are a significant class of engineering materials, encompassing thermoplastic polyurethanes and three-dimensional crosslinked thermosets. While thermoplastic polyurethanes can be reengineered through melt processing at the end of their life, recycling crosslinked thermoset materials presents challenges. To address the need for closing material cycles, this chapter explores the design considerations for polyurethanes that facilitate reuse at the end of their use time. It reviews strategies and technologies for closing anthropogenic carbon cycles, taking into account polyurethane architecture.
