These descriptions appear to be the result of a social and cultural process that gradually changed the Byzantines’ attitude towards voyages and travel in general, resulting in the preservation of more dangerous incidents in the letters, which, of course, have always had a rhetorical interest. Even so, the phenomena described, particularly the sudden changes in weather, suggest that climate change during this period may have played a role in the recording of them, although this is difficult to prove.
