The chapter is a historical analysis of European ideas, approaches, and needs of Czechoslovakia, from its establishment in 1918 to its dissolution in 1992. At the same time, it creates space for the analysis of the European integration ambitions of its successor countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The concept of Europeanization assumes that integration ambitions within the European system contribute to convergence and overall improvement of the state’s position in the European space. We thus identify not only the challenges of the integration process, but also how some parts of political life seem to be more affected by the process of European integration than others. Further, by analyzing discourse, concepts and ideas of the Czechoslovak elites in the 20th century, we interpret the development of the attitude towards the integration processes in Europe considering the impact of various internal and external factors. Finally, the chapter elaborates on how the integration ambitions of Czechia and Slovakia had been addressed in their accession process up to the date of EC/EU accession in 2004.

摘要
