Few countries like Hungary have been marked by the search for their place among the independent nations in the sphere of Central Europe: its trajectory has been conflictive and contradictory from the “Compromise” of the sixties of the nineteenth century with Austria to the years of Soviet domination after the Second World War, passing through a convulsive stage like few others in the interwar years, the regency era. Therefore, the aspiration during the long decades of Soviet-style communism for independence and its struggle for freedom marked the Hungarian people like few others, as did its aspiration along the path of Europeanism for integration into the European Community.
