This chapter presents corneal crosslinkingCorneal crosslinking (CXL) and its main features. CXL is based on the principles of photodynamic therapyTherapy (PDT) and includes epithelial debridement, the use of a sensibilisator, riboflavin, followed by application of ultraviolet A light (UVA). The induction of formation of cross-links between the collagen fibers of the corneal stroma increases the corneal stiffening and provides corneal stability, thus consisting CXL a basic treatmentTreatment modality for corneal ectasias. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of riboflavin and UVA have led to the emerging use of CXL in the treatmentTreatment of further corneal pathologies such as infections, corneal ulcerations and melting. Further investigation in the field of PDT and CXL could show interesting future results in the treatmentTreatment of infectious keratitisInfectious keratitis.
