Recurrent corneal erosionCorneal erosion is characterized by repeated episodes of sudden-onset of pain, watering, foreign-body sensation while waking-up from sleep. This is caused by abnormal epithelial adhesion to the underlying basal lamina. It may be unilateral or bilateral. There may be micro or macro erosions. The diagnosisDiagnosis is made by slit-lamp examination and history. Slit-lamp findings are mild conjunctival congestion with corneal epithelial defect with loose epithelium or focal area of irregular hazy epithelium. It may be associated with traumaTrauma, especially nail injuryInjury. Other causes include epithelial basement membrane dystrophyEpithelial basement membrane dystrophy, lattice dystrophy, granular dystrophy, and macular dystrophy. Lubricating drops and ointments are helpful in majority cases. In non-responding cases, surgical modalities like phototherapeutic keratectomyPhototherapeutic keratectomy, or anterior stromal puncture may be required.
