Prior to the arrival of biomedicine, African traditional medicine existed as an age-old tradition, rooted in the customs, cultures, and traditions of African society. Over the years, biomedical practice has tended to compete or exclude instead of complementing African traditional medicine to achieve positive patient outcomes. With the strengths and weaknesses of both practices, compounded by poverty and a limited workforce in biomedical practice, there is a need to address treatment gaps by promoting collaboration. The recognition and integration of African traditional medicine into mainstream practice can provide a step towards bridging the gap in mental health human resources and increasing access to treatment.

摘要
