This chapter contributes to the narrative on the influence of cultural differences on the expression of mental illness with special attention to the Ghanaian setting. The authors discuss how some dominant cultures (Akan and Dagomba) conceptualize mental illness, their health-seeking preferences when they face mental health challenges, and the influence of stigma in mental health care. The chapter ends with recommendations to foster mental health awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness with a special mention of participants (including the authors in this book) from a global mental health programme (Australia Awards), who developed a video named “Let’s Unite for Mental Health” to challenge stigmatization of mental illness in Africa.

摘要
