Burns in Children
摘要
A burn can be defined as coagulative destruction of the skin and its structures by thermal, chemical, mechanical, or electrical injury. Thermal injuries account for more than 300,000 deaths annually and for 10 million disability adjusted life years lost each year, more than 95% of such occur in low- and middle-income countries [1]. The incidence, severity, length of hospital stay, and mortality globally due to burns is decreasing in the more developed countries [2]. It is a disease which is more prevalent in low socio-economic regions [3]. Most injuries in children less than 5 years of age are due to scalds and contact burns while flame burns are more common in older children. About a quarter of all burns occur in younger children, especially toddlers, with nearly three-quarters of the injuries being sustained at home. Non-accidental is suspected to be the cause in about 1% of all burn injuries [4].
