Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is recognised as a non-cardiogenic lung oedema causing hypoxaemic respiratory failure following a systemic inflammatory response that damages the pulmonary alveolar-capillary membrane. Limitations in the applicability of the adult criteria to children prompted the Paediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference (PALICC) group to publish a specific definition and guidelines for the management of ARDS in children.
