Since the advent of video capsule endoscopy in 2000 many different capsule types have been developed and brought to market by different manufacturers. Some capsules are produced in the third generation with massive improvements in resolution and battery life span. Technically, images of the gastrointestinal tract are acquired by CMOS camera chips and processed by application-specific circuits. Light-emitting diodes illuminate the lumen by flashing with every image acquired. An adaptive frame rate depending on the speed of capsule can be provided. Many capsules use radio transmission of data to external antennas connected to a recorder. Alternatively, electric human body communication to electrodes on the skin is used, or on-board storage of data by a chip in the capsule. Double-headed capsules are required for colon capsule endoscopy but can also be applied for SBCE. For VCE of the stomach, an external magnetic control is necessary to visualize the large gastric lumen.
