Capsule endoscopy provides non-invasive imaging of the gastrointestinal tract. First introduced to examine the small bowel, the addition of a second camera and an increased frame capture rate allowed it to be developed to image esophagus and colon. External magnets and patient position change can now be used to move a capsule around the stomach cleaned and distended by swallowed water. An automated examination which does not require an endoscopist is possible and machine learning algorithms which recognise gastric landmarks and pathology are available. It is anticipated that in the near future, these algorithms will interact with the control mechanisms to provide a completely automated examination, an illustrated report and diagnosis.
