After the establishment of the method of double-balloon enteroscopy, other endoscopic methods have been used to view the small intestine. In 2007, Olympus introduced a new technique, single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE), as an alternative to double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) (Olympus Medical Systems Corp., Tokyo, Japan). The goal was to establish a simplified balloon-assisted endoscopic system that retains the effectiveness of DBE but is less time consuming. The SBE system and the technique of insertion in the small bowel are comparable to DBE, but because SBE does not have a balloon at the tip of the endoscope, the time-consuming procedure of installing the distal balloon at the beginning of the procedure is missing. A second advantage is that the technique of insertion is simplified by eliminating the need to inflate and deflate two different balloons in various steps.
