The PillCam patency system, an accessory to the PillCam video capsule, is intended to verify adequate patency of the gastrointestinal tract in patients with known or suspected strictures prior to the administration of a video capsule. In case of retention, this test capsule dissolves between 30 and 100 h. A retained patency capsule is visible by X-ray. However, for localization to the small bowel or to the colon, a CT scan is more accurate. Clinical application of the patency capsule is discussed.
