The commercialization of visible light emitting diodes (LEDs) has rapidly led to the LEDification of lighting, creating a favorable development environment and research value for VLCs primarily aimed at using illumination light for communications. In this chapter, two white LED light sources that can be used for both illumination and communication are introduced. Additionally, with the development of laser lighting technology in recent years, VL laser diodes (LDs) will also become a reasonable choice for VLC light sources. Therefore, this chapter also introduces VL LDs including vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). Finally, a comparison is made between LEDs and LDs in terms of eye safety, output and modulation characteristics.
