High prices of fossil fuels have resulted in high prices of electricity in recent times. This phenomenon have made renewables, such as wind power, a more feasible option. In particular, offshore wind turbines are considered a more suitable alternative to onshore ones due to socio-economic, environmental, and technical benefits. However, the deployment of wind farms requires appropriate planning for the project to be feasible. In this context, Italy is looking forward to enhance its offshore wind potential. However, strict permitting procedures and guidelines for these projects is rather a challenge for the country. The Strait of Sicily is considered to be a suitable region for the deployment of such wind farms. Hence, this study focuses on the problem of sustainable sites selection for floating offshore wind development in the case of Sicily. To this purpose, this work employs the fuzzy based Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach together with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to identify optimal locations for future wind farm development in the Strait of Sicily.

摘要
