2D Sketching in CAD Software for 3D Printing

The use of 2D sketches is a critical step in creating a 3D model. The majority of Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software currently employs an iterative design process that involves modifying 3D primitives using 2D sketches and volume operations, gradually adding specific features to the 3D model. While there are some alternatives to this process, most are heavily reliant on 2D sketch design. Therefore, it is essential for 3D designers to possess this skill. This chapter aims to present the tools available in a widely used CAD software (Fusion 360) and provide relevant data, examples, and advice on the limitations of each 2D sketch operation when applied to the design of objects for 3D printing. The chapter concludes with examples for the reader to practice their 2D design skills.
