The healthcare sector, and innovation and digitalization processes in particular, have attracted the attention of researchers. The complexity of the phenomenon and the economic-demographic implications have made the study so multi-layered that it was deemed appropriate to define a digitalization indicator for the completeness of the analysis. Many researchers have looked at the potential impact and benefits of disruptive technologies on the entire healthcare system and it has been noted that the biggest shortcoming is a timely investigation of the basic parameters in the adoption of new computerized processes in the sector. In this paper, we first define the parameters suitable for analyzing the complex phenomenon and then, using a non-compensatory approach, construct a weighted composite indicator to measure the degree of digitalization of each healthcare organization. Although the results confirm our hypotheses, namely a strong territoriality of the phenomenon, some critical considerations arise on the digitalization strategies applied. This study aims to provide important theoretical and practical implications to enrich the mainstream literature on digitalization in healthcare.
