Introduction

One of the exciting things about this book is how much innovative work in theatre by women in the twenty-first century in the Anglo-American theatrical world it has been necessary to miss out—while our contributors include discussions of work of the last few decades by Alice Birch, debbie tucker green, Jackie Kay, Aleesha Harris, Anne Carson, Ella Hickson, Lucy Prebble—there are many writers to whom we have not been able to give space—including Evaristo, Kirkwood, Blythe, to name but a few of the most prominent. This current flourishing of women in theatre, indeed of women experimenting in theatre, is admirably covered by Farfan and Ferris (2021) and Angel-Perez and Rousseau (2023). This current ‘new wave’ (Angel-Perez and Rousseau 2023, title page), indebted as it is to intersectional feminism, also emerges out of a history of women working and writing in the theatre over centuries. Woolf wrote nearly a century ago now in A Room of One’s Own, that to write and create we have to ‘think back through our mothers’ (Woolf 1928: loc.960):
