The theory of dilations, both for single operators and operator algebras, is a powerful tool for analyzing operators and representations. It is a method of extending an operator (or a representation of an operator algebra) to another acting on a larger space which has better properties. This can be exploited to provide structural results, such as an extended functional calculus.
