Arts and Culture bring knowledge and experiences that are valuable resources of inspiration in product development. How to apply these resources into product design will be discussed in this study. This paper presents the principles and techniques for cultural product design, which aims to promote sustainable and innovative product development. The study reviews the literature on cultural product design, explores the existing frameworks, and identifies the design techniques and principles in cultural product design-based literature. A research matrix is formulated based on the literature, and its effectiveness is evaluated through a single case study with research-through-design methodology. The case study involves utilizing Sumbanese peranakan cultural artifacts, ranging from the traditional house to its horsing culture, as inspiration for creating a set of furniture designs. Within the design process, the cultural product design matrix is implemented, resulting in the creation of a prototype as an outcome. This approach fosters exploration and the development of new insights and understanding in the field of cultural product design. The research produces comprehensive matrix of cultural product design that integrates cultural feature, design elements on three level of emotional design: visceral, behavioral, reflective, and design techniques for sustainable and innovative product development that can serve as a valuable reference for modern creative product design education, as it promotes cultural sustainability and encourages students to design products that reflect cultural values and heritage. The paper concludes by discussing the potential benefits of implementing cultural product design matrix, including enhanced designers’ cultural appreciation, unique and innovative design solutions, as well as sustainability, longevity, and cultural revival and preservation. This research has significant implications for the field of product design and design education, contributing to the development of a more sustainable and culturally aware approach to product design.

摘要
